Sixth Form Courses

Since September 2017 all A Levels have become linear.

This means that all A level public examinations will take place at the end of the 2 years of study, although students will be rigorously assessed internally. Students have the choice of 24 subjects here at Southfield*

Some of the vocational courses, for example, Health and Social Care, CTEC Business and Applied Science have exams within their first year.

As a result of the new linear courses and following consultation with the Universities, the majority of students will opt to study 3 subjects. A minority of students will be allowed to take 4 A Levels. Those students will need to demonstrate the highest level of academic excellence in their GCSE results. Please see our entry criteria.

Course Information

Please see below for details on entry requirements for each subject offered at Southfield, as well as information regarding course content.

*Please note, there may be variations in the provision each year due to the requirements of the incoming year group, as well as Government Policy

Teaching

A level subjects are studied for nine or ten hours per fortnight.  Subjects with smaller teaching groups will receive nine contact hours. In addition to subject lessons, students will be timetabled study support lessons (once a fortnight) and have the opportunity to study either a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), or the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) within their timetabled hours. Private study is essential for success; therefore, students will receive timetabled study sessions in our designated Sixth Form Study Area.
