A Level Further-Maths

“Why should I study Further Mathematics?”

Further Mathematics is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A-level Mathematics. Students who do it often say it is their favourite subject.

Students who take A-Level Further Mathematics find that the additional time spent studying mathematics boosts their marks in single A-level Mathematics.

Further mathematics makes the transition from sixth form to university courses which are mathematically rich that much easier as more of the first year course content will be familiar.

Further mathematics enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in their applications for university and future employment.

“What will I study?”

In the first year you will study three themes:

Mathematical argument, language and proof / Mathematical problem solving / Mathematical modelling

These three themes will involve the study of Further Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics.

Further Pure Maths:

Complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Further vectors, Polar coordinates and Hyperbolic functions.

Mechanics:

Dimensional analysis, Momentum and collisions, Work, energy and power and Circular motion.

Statistics:

Discrete random variables, Poisson distribution, Type I and II errors and power of a test, Continuous random variables.

In the second year of the course these themes will be covered in greater depth with additional content such as Differential Equations.
