Building Relationships in the Classroom

All staff and students are fully aware of the expected routines for learning at Southfield.  These ensure an orderly start and finish to each lesson, and focus on making every minute count in the main part.

It is hard to argue against the assertion that learning can be maximised when the relationships between teachers and students are positive. 

Features of postive teacher-student relationships:

• Warmth and kindness
• Mutual respect
• Boundaries; fairness and consistency
• Shared goals - learning
• Defined roles; not 'friends', not 'personal'
• Not autocratic; not about fear
• Emotions; awareness and management of
