Accelerated Reader

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is one of the ways that progress in reading is supported at Southfield. It is a computer program developed by Renaissance Learning that helps teachers manage and monitor students’ independent reading practice. All students in Years 7 and 8 take part in the scheme and will have lessons in the library dedicated to development of reading skills using AR.

How Does AR Work?

Your daughter picks a book at her own level and reads it at her own pace. When finished, your daughter takes a short quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read. AR gives students and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help set your daughter targets and direct on-going reading practice.

Students using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

Teachers and librarians help your daughter choose books at an appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that she can pass the quiz and experience success.
